| Griot's Garage Cover Car Handbook 292: 1953 Custom Corvette Roadster |
Now here is a unique piece of Corvette Americana with great style and an interesting history. The car was purchased new in 1953 and subsequently wrecked by its orginal owner. In 1959, it was sold to well-known customizer, Buster Dobbs who installed a small-block 283ci V-8 with three 2-barrel carbs in his Knoxville, Tennessee speed shop. Buster also incorporated some stunning body mods, incorporating a '56 Studebaker grille, frenching-in '58 Lincoln headlights and '56 Dodge taillights, handcrafting fiberglass rear fins, installing a hood scoop, and shooting custom paint. The Corvette was wrecked again in the 1960s, and parked on a riverbank for over 20 years. In 1990, a new owner restored the car, adding a Bugs Bunny caricature to the paint and nicknaming the car HARERAZN because, "this Corvette would raise the hair on your arms when it passed by." Thanks to the current owner for allowing us the privelege of photographing this amazing piece of automotive art! |
